The most beautiful title-pages in our music collection
Printed music from the 18th and 19th centuries is a rare collector's item and is usually only offered by specialist music antique dealers. Unlike books music did not have a decorative cover. The larger format as well as the use of copper-plate engraving or lithography in the production process meant that it was possible to awaken the customer's interest by creating artistically designed title-pages. The title-pages of editions produced using type printing, a printing process often employed before 1800, are occasionally decorated with woodcut vignettes. The type of musical composition did not usually play any role in the designs the engraver incorporated.
On the following pages you can see some of the beautiful title-pages in our music collection. The motifs used in the illustrations on the pages of the library website can now be seen in their original context.
